a nice little town, well worth a weekend away. Only hassle - all the Sunday coaches back to Singapore (and even JB) were booked solid by the time we arrived on the Saturday - we ended up having to take a cab back.

Have not visited any posh restaurants as I am more keen in the local food which are what makes Melaka famous. Visited the restaurant at Jalan Bunga Raya, opposite the Mimosa Hotel. Food is ok, but beware of overcharging. I was overchargeg for the plain white rice (3 bowls instead of 4) but managed to claim back this small amount of 70 cts. But later discovered that one dish of mixed vegetables which was not served but was charged RM10.00.
should have taken the dinner at the roadside stalls. The food looks tastier.
Anyway, visited the Portuguese village but the food at a restaurant there was good. So would not recommend anyone there. However, had not dined at the side stalls which shows good fresh fish and crabs. These stalls may serve better food and might be cheaper.

Melaka is dirty and smelly. This is in both the old and new parts of the town. No metered taxi so you're screwed if you don't know the rates. Everything pretty much shuts down at sunset so you're stuck inside the hotel. Historical sites are not worth my time.

The 45 minute guided river boat trip was excellent due to the information provided by the guide.
Beware of the traffic as there are no pavements.

Malacca is still the sleepy town it was a few years ago when we visited. It has a lot of historical value to Malaysia. Street signs were not very helpful.

Malacca itself is a very historically interesting town. I'm sure there is normally a fair bit to do. However, I wouldn't recommend it during Chinese New Year as most shops and tours are closed down over this period. I laughed when I read about the lucky draw for the best annecdote from your holiday as when we came back we realised that was why we didn't have a great time - there were no stories to tell, everything was shut!
