The beaches here are truly worth it. Take a day trip to Coral Island, Phi Phi Island or one of the other options to experience the best snorkeling. WARNING for families, don't go too far down the side streets in Patong. We had totes shove very graphic pictures in our faces as "advertisement".

Patong is very commercialized but there is a long stretch of beach and the kids loved playing in the sea. However you do get bothered by the locals trying to sell you a massage of some sorts. The tuk tuk drivers are a pest too, always asking if you want a taxi - be wary of the prices and try and get a bit of local knowledge on how much you should pay, we got ripped off, no wonder he was so friendly and accommodating, he probably made his daily quota out of us alone!

Generally speaking loved Phuket. We stayed 6 days, a bit too long. 4 would have been perfect. There are lounge chairs on the beach for rent which is great. We really enjoyed our seafood dinner at Savoy on the strip. Don't do a day trip to the Similan Islands. We were very dissapointed. There was a lot of floating garbage in what was supposed to be a marine reservation park. And the trip there is a smaller motor boat was uncomfortably bumpy.

We went Sea Canoeing, which is well worth it. Quite a unique landscape which makes a great day/overnight trip. If you do the day trip, don't expect to be the only ones there, as it is over touristed with 17 different boats offering those services, each with 10+ canoes!! Aside from that, my personal advice is avoid Patong Beach at all costs, unless you're looking for sex or fake DVD's.

Patong is a nice beach (excellent water temperature) but you get annoyed by all people asking if you want a massage, if you want watches, if you want to do parasailing ... Uff
Next time I will try another beach, hopefully it will be more calm ...

Beware of the unscrupulous airport taxi drivers that pretend not to know where your hotel is. They will stop at a tour agency to get directions and then you spend thirty minutes telling the tour agent that you do not want to arrange a tour with them. Never give the tour agent your name because they will call you nite and day at the hotel trying to sell you tours.

Patong:
If you want a quiet relaxed holiday, do NOT go to Patong Beach. If however, you want night-life, endless shopping, and convenience that you get at home, such as ATM's, MacDonalds etc go to Patong.
Be prepared to bargain for all your purchases, except in the Dept Stores, such as Ocean Plaza.
After a week in Patong, you will find the Indian guys hassling you on the street to get a suit made in their shop very irritating.
Be warned regarding the lady-boys on Bangla Road. From 8pm to 9pm, they stand in the street with outrageous clothes on, hassling tourists to take photographs. They want money for these photographs!! Much better to sit on the opposite side of the road, in one of the quieter (no bar girls) open bars (Blue Lotus or Shipwreck) and watch the amazing antics.
Most of the shops and restaurants do not open until midday at the earliest. However, the roadside stalls open around 10am.
DO NOT rent motorbikes, since on Phuket approx. one person a day is killed in motorbike accidents, and you will find that such activities are NOT covered by your holiday insurance.
I would recommend you try game fishing, Thai Boxing in Phuket town on Friday evening, and at least one trip out to the Phi Phi Islands of Pang Nga (James Bond) Island. Look for Sim's tour which we found very good, since many other tours take you to overpriced shops/restaurants, where the tour guides get a percentage.

Went to Phuket Phantasea (again). Phi Phi Island day trip worth the money. The Phuket Transportation Office is implementing "fixed" prices that Tuk Tuk drivers can charge - so tourists will no longer be overcharged, and if they think they were, numbers to call and report the driver.

We really like the boat trips to Phi Phi and Kai Island. The beaches are beautiful. Although I shall not recommend the half-day trip by speed boat (not a comfortable half-an-hour trip to go and to come back), I still think they worth the money. You can always choose a bigger boat to go too. Phuket Fantasea show is expensive for what it is. We were also quite disappointed by the seats. We have reserved them through travel agency in advance and the seats turned out to be the on the very last row upstairs. We could hardly see the beginning of the show because we were so far from the stage and we had to stand up all the times. It's probably better off to buy the tickets on the spot. We have noticed many people did that.

Phuket is a bit like the curate's egg- good in parts. Patong is a huge disappointment. it is crassly commercial, full of aggressive touts. However, spots like Kata and to some degree, small towns in the interior are quiet and peaceful and beautiful. The roads are adequate. We drove around a bit, and although development is still going on apace, there are still spots that are relatively green and unspoilt.
