Stayed at  Imperial Mae Ping Hotel, The - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
We went on the elephant safari (be careful the Bangkok airport Thai airways group said they were the cheapest offering this - not so it was cheaper in Changmai get the local Changmai booklet at the airport or should be in your hotel. The tours of the handicraft villages is a complete rip off - you can buy all the staff much, much cheaper in the night markets.

Jewellery is cheaper in Changmai too - overall we found this to be the cheapest place to buy handicrafts much cheaper then Phuket and Malaysia. We spent a great 4 days here with a family of two adults and three children under 14.

I would advise going to Thailand sooner rather than later as it is becoming more and more cheesy everyday as the tourist industry grows. We found the diving in Ko Tao to be fabulous and a real chilled out atmospehere there, although it is getting busier and the rubbish is starting to be an issue. We didn't bother going to Samui as it appears to be the new Torremolinos of the east. We opted for Ko Chang instead, which is quieter, with nicer accomodation and a beautiful Rainforest setting. A word of warning - don't go to Thailand if the thought of fat sleazy old men with young Thai girls turns your stomach, as they are ubiquitous.

Stayed at  Baiyoke Sky Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Interesting town, loud, but friendly people. Except the most Tuc tuc drivers and some Taxi drivers, which tries to get you into shops.

Stayed at  Tamarind Village, Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
We read a recommendation about a restaurant called Once Upon a Time, that is located at the River Ping Palace hotel. This was terrific and we would definitely recommend it! It is a little out of the way and it took a couple tuk-tuk drivers to figure out how to get there, but it was definitely worth the extra effort. We went there twice, taking friends the second time. Each time, we were the only people in the whole restaurant that sat right on the river. It was very romantic, and extremely affordable. Their English skills suffer, but through charades we had great time ordering some of the best Thai food we've ever had! We highly recommend the appetizer of minced prawns with lemon grass, served with a coconut sauce. YUM. Also, their curry/coconut milk sea food stir fry was inspiring. I can't say enough about this place.

As a word of warning, we learned from a trusted citizen of Chiang Mai that there is some shady business practices that go on with the tailoring (& jewelry) industry there. Be wary of any "locals" or other Asian tourists that pose as individuals who are also buying tailored goods, and who recommend particular shops and are willing to send you there. They are paid by the shop owners and receive a large commission for targeting you. We unfortunately were had on this one before we found out the system, but believe me we weren't the only ones!

We met countless tourists that had the same experience but still don't know that they were had. We found out too late that we had paid at least $75 too much on a suit. Just make sure that you do your own shopping around, and don't a commit to a single shop until you know what you want. Also, haggling is free game even in these stores. Hope you can benefit from our stupidity. Next time we go back, we'll handle it much differently.

Stayed at  Westin Grande Sukhumvit - Bangkok, Thailand.
Do not beleive locals you meet in bangkok with any of their tales. Especially about where to go, and the opening times etc. (they just want to get you to go on took-took tours etc) Do not use took-tooks, as they are expensive (Relatively) and sampling the regions CO polluted air is not a good experience. Recommend the Lemongrass restaurant on soi24 off sukhumvit road (2 skytrain stops away). A very authentic thai resturaunt.

M Oneil 03 June 2002
Stayed at  Amari Boulevard Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Avoid the Tuk-Tuks. We tried several times to get from A to B but the drivers refused to take us unless we would make a detour via C. Meter taxis are very cheap but make sure the meter is working and set to 35 Bhat before you get in!

P Demediuk 03 June 2002
Stayed at  Imperial Mae Ping Hotel, The - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Lunch at Jim Thompsons. Beware of touts telling you things are closed.

C Shikashio 02 June 2002
Stayed at  Novotel Bangkok On Siam Square - Bangkok, Thailand.
Buy the 3 day SkyTrain Tourist pass (comes with free small guide book). Beats waiting in line for single ride tickets. Beware of taxi cab scams (i.e., he knows a good tailor, jewelry, etc.) Suits can be tailored for around $85 USD and cotton shirts, around $15 USD. Crocidile Farm can be an experience. Includes an Elephant Show, Crocidile show, etc. Take SkyTrain to "On Nut" and take a taxi for around 400 BHT or less.

S Etherington 02 June 2002
Stayed at  Peninsula Bangkok - Bangkok, Thailand.
Jesters restuarant within the hotel is magnificent. We only stayed the weekend so happily did not wander far however we did pop across to the oriental and would note no shorts - long or short for males so if you fancy a look in - and you're male, make sure you haver full length trousers and no singlets! Even if it's 90 degrees!!

S Yeen lee 02 June 2002
Stayed at  Majestic Suites - Bangkok, Thailand.
Thailand is a land of smiles and peace. However, do not be easily taken advantage of by this charm. The gem stone scam Thai govt has tried to warn tourist about is true. The ploy on getting tourist trapped are very convincing therefore, always remember not to even listen to anybody who tries to tell you where to buy gem stone or make money out of buying them.
