R Frost 24 April 2001
Stayed at  Baiyoke Suite Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
I visited the Grand Palace (nice place but too many tourists and a little OTT), Wat Pho (amazing reclining Buddua), floating market at Damonsak (well worthwhile), Jim Thompson`s house (a must see) and Wat Tramit (OK), plus shopping (full of the usual tourist riff raff but some good bartgins to be had if you look closely enough).

I often went by water taxi and bus as everything is too far to walk, especially as it was in to the 100s. Avoid taxis and tuk tuks as they can be more hassle than they are worth. Arranging a taxi to the floating market or similar trip outof town is worth it but avaoid any gem shopping or the Elephant Park/Crocodile Farm which is both tacky and from my opinion disregarding the rights of animals kept there.

C Cascon 24 April 2001
Stayed at  Bangkok Palace Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Hotel staff was friendly and accomodating but if you had anything out of the ordinary (non routine) you were largely on your own. I find this sort of "assistance" common in Third World societies. DO NOT EXPECT THE STAFF TO BE PROBLEM SOLVERS. Everything is "no problem" but keep your expectations low and don't assume anything. Try to book tours over the 'net before arriving in Bangkok and save the high commissions charged by using the hotel service. Companies commonly offer discounts for multiple bookings of tours or even if there are more than two of you, but you have to ask and you must do it before you leave. You don't seem to have the bargaining leverage for tours when you are standing in front of them that you do over the 'net. Expect a minimum discount of 100 Baht per person per tour. We often had a private tour for the four of us even though we asked for the "join tour" (non private) price.

Avoid "tuk tuks." Other than the obligatory tourist ride on one they are noisy, hot, and uncomfortable. Often you can get a cheaper ride in an airconditioned metered taxi than you can in a "tuk tuk". The drivers, by and large, try to charge high rates to obvious tourists in Bangkok.

L Wendell 20 April 2001
Stayed at  Amari Boulevard Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
the hotel was away from most of the sights we wanted to see. If I were to return to Bangkok again I would try to stay on the river, it seems better located to Temples and sights we were interested in. It's a very dirty city and the air seemed better at the other end. we had to use taxies the whole time and you must be careful or they will take advantage of you.

Stayed at  China Town Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Bangkok is a nice city for young people who want to have good time in bars and dancing. But it is became the capital of sex tourism. It's very sad to se blanc old men (we called western porks)with very young thai grils (who try to obtain hardly some USD from porks). Thai government should do something, there are too much teenagers ready to prostitute :-(

D Sylvia felder 31 March 2001
Stayed at  Amity Green Hills Hotel - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
I had traveled to Chiang Mai 11 years ago and this time was sadly disappointed due to all the pollution.

J Foster 31 March 2001
Stayed at  Allamanda Laguna Phuket - Phuket, Thailand.
Laguna Phuket is a great concept however the hotels have now started charging for a "pool fee". This does not apply to restaurants. The fee was 600 Baht per person per day inclusive of one item off the poolside menu at the Laguna Beach Resort. With a family costs add up. The other are likely to follow suit. It is worth finding out exactly what the charges are going to be prior to setting off to another hotel for the day. Phuket airport has a 500 Baht departure tax for all over 2.

D Sylvia felder 28 March 2001
Stayed at  Pratunam Park Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Bangkok has changed a lot since I visited 11 years ago. Less pollution. Traffic actually moves in certain areas due to toll ways and the skytrain. I understand the subway has been finished and I am sure that will be another plus for moving about the city without 3 hours traffic jams! Enjoyed a dinner at Once Upon A time around the corner from the hotel.

A Bischof 17 March 2001
Stayed at  Holiday Inn Resort Phuket - Phuket, Thailand.
Patong is a very busy and developed but fun for a few days. Great restaurant as Bat Rim Pae, lots of US navy ships while we were staying. Good shopping for fakes but must bargain. No tour taken, very lazy. Quite a lot of mozzies and got around in tuk tuks.

P Bennett 15 March 2001
Stayed at  Menam Riverside Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Took a boat directly from the hotel around the western Khlongs which was both fascinating and an assault on the senses - especially smell! Tuk-Tuks are a good way of getting around but seem inevitably linked to a visit to an export shop or some other sort of shop. This gets frustrating especially when, like us, you don't have very long. We were also dumped after being dropped off at one of these shops. Taxis were very good and reliable - if you don't have so much time or you don't want to go shopping - use them!

P Manning 20 February 2001
Stayed at  Royal Princess Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The local tailors are very variable in their quality. The fellows located right outside the RP front door to the right charge prices which are almost as high as those in Singapore - so no great savings there. Around the corner to the left, opposite the Surinwongse Hotel, is an outfit called Big Boss. Their tailors unbelievably sew the collar stripes of a striped shirt in the wrong [i.e. vertical] plane! Their prices are lower than those of the counterparts right outside the RP, but then I guess you get the quality you pay for.
