Skytrain is the only way to get around. Use taxis only if required as they take much longer and cost the same.
Weekend market and Pratunam market are essential for the travelling shopper. Patpong night market has good quality items but at a much higher cost.

Avoid the jewel buying scams, we did thank to Lonely Planet Guide, but everywhere we went someone was trying the scam. Also, the tuk-tuk drivers always rip you off, it was always cheaper to take a regular (and air con) taxi.

Make sure taxis turn on their meters when you get in. Also sometimes it can be quicker to walk.

After several vistits to Phuket -the last 10 years ago- I was shocked that the unce upon a time beautiful island became a kind of Majorca of the east, a mass destination for cheap tourism (see hotel), often not even prepared for that.It will definately take more than annother 10 years until we return.

Bangkok is an excellent city and extremely good value for money.
I was visiting primarily on business, but did manage to do some excellent shopping and go to a few good restaurants.
The city was vibrant and lively and would make an excellent stop over for a few days.
I used local taxis to get around as they are cheap , clean and plentiful. Avoid the over priced hotel transportation but use only marked official taxis.

Bangkok..Wat Po, Gtrand Palace. Phuket and Phi-Phi island. Bangkok had to get around entirely on metered cabs since tuk-tuk drivers refused to take us where we wanted to go.

Bangkoks traffic and pollution are hell. Being able to take the Choa river boat
to central Bangkok is a major advantage, as well as wonderful and relaxing way
to see and get around Bangkok. You can also access the new sky train from
the boat.

The elephant ride is fun, and the countryside around Chiang Mai is nice. But Chiang Mai is drawing thousands of tourists every day, so don't expect to see unspoiled old Thailand there.
