B Slotemaker de bruine 07 November 2002
Stayed at  Silom City Inn - Bangkok, Thailand.
We visited the Palace and the Wat Pho. A place to eat near the palace was the S & P restaurant, which is about 33 metres to the right back toward the canal. Follow the street on the right for about 300 metres and it is in behind a car park on the left. Amongst the streetside stalls this find, an air-conditioned restaurant overlooking the canal, was a gem!! Food was good and reasonably priced. It is 25% cheaper on a Wednesday.

I would avoid the tuk tuk drivers. They take you to expensive shops (where they get a commisssion) and often take you out of the way. Also streetside 'helpers' also give you wrong information - e.g. the Palace is closed today, why don't you do X (obviously with one of their sidekicks)? Best to avoid these!!

The Silom Village was great for Thai dancing, and again have a la carte - better value than the set priced menu. Also warn travellers not to take the taxis offered at 650 baht from the airport. You can get in for 300 baht with the taxis which are controlled.

Stayed at  Asia Bangkok Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Beware that many streets get flooded during the rainy season. Travel by the train is a "must" at this time.

Stayed at  Prince Palace Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Bangkok is a crazy town. Have a look at one temple, itīs enough : ) Thais are friendly and helpful, but some of them love only your money. Donīt talk to someone whoīs offering his help first. Starting at the airport: "Taxi, sir?" is the question, you will hear very often. From airport to downtown you have to pay 600,- THB - take the Bus (100,- THB) or the train for 5,- !!! Baht. Never enter a standing taxi! Donīt visit McDonalds - Thai food is fantastic!

Stayed at  Narai Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Bangkok is a very intersting city, however, it is very humid. We were there October 19-21, which is the beginning of the high season with cooler weather. It was extremely humid with temperatures in the low 90's. I'd hate to be in Bangkok in March or April, which we were told is the highest humidity and temperature. According to the local girl we were with Nov - Jan is the best time to visit.

Stayed at  Sofitel Silom Bangkok - Bangkok, Thailand.
Bangkok is a very hot and bustling place which rewards those who give themselves time to acclimatise. There are numerous temples and other sites to visit - beware of Tuk-Tuk drivers who offer "cheap" trips around the sites as they will take you to tailor shops and jewellery shops to earn commission and pressure you into purchasing.

K Murcklen 19 October 2002
Stayed at  Amari Atrium Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Bangkok is not a favorite city - lots of pollution - traffic congestion - takes a long time to get anywhere by taxi.

WARNING - thieves come in all kinds of packages, even friendly - watch out for the tuk tuk drivers and the jewelry and tailor scandals / scoundrels. Unless you have a week and can shop around and know your products / services don't even think of getting tailored goods - then choose your own dealer; buy material separate from the tailor.

Z Rosenberg 19 October 2002
Stayed at  Club Andaman Beach Resort - Phuket, Thailand.
We went Sea Canoeing, which is well worth it. Quite a unique landscape which makes a great day/overnight trip. If you do the day trip, don't expect to be the only ones there, as it is over touristed with 17 different boats offering those services, each with 10+ canoes!! Aside from that, my personal advice is avoid Patong Beach at all costs, unless you're looking for sex or fake DVD's.

Stayed at  Amari Watergate Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
As it's a nightmare taking a taxi in Bangkok, it is strongly recommended to stay in a hotel near a BTS station despite of higher price or away from the major shopping centres. Taxi drivers there always:
1.Charge you higher fare without turning on the fare metre.
2. Taking you to somewhere for shopping where you dont't want to go but they can get a commission or fuel coupons. Air pollution in Bangkok is terrible, yet Thai food there is fantastic, eg. crab curry served in the restaurant inside Le Meridien Hotel next to the Chit Lom BTS Station. For ladies, Wacoal underwear (available in World Trade Centre & Central Shopping Centre near the Chit Lom BTS Station) is more than 70% cheaper than in Hong Kong.

S Kern 08 October 2002
Stayed at  Imperial Queens Park Hotel, The - Bangkok, Thailand.
I've been to Bangkok about 15 times, and never tire of JJ (Chatuchak) Weekend Market. A Khlang boat trip is a must, and I recommend climbing the Golden Mount for great views and some peace. Dusit Zoo can be refreshing, but a little disturbing also.

More taxi drivers are trying the "No meter for airport" ruse - just get out and get another taxi. Hail your taxi's away from hotels too to slice the price by about 25%.

K Hendrik 08 October 2002
Stayed at  Montien Hotel Pattaya - Pattaya, Thailand.
Unfortunately sea water not very clean in Pattaya; that is why a nice pool is very important.
